M.Sc(Mathematics) :

Objective:In response to the exponentially growing demand for well trained post-graduates in Mathematics from Institutions with professional excellence, the Karnataka State Open University is offering a Two year semester based M.Sc. Mathematics Degree Programme (Two Semester per year-Total Four Semester). The programme is specially designed for Teachers, Engineers, computer Scientists and others who are interested in Mathematics but could not pursue a Master degree programme in Mathematics for various reasons. The Karnataka State Open University’s M.Sc. Mathematics programme is a tightly scheduled, highly structured, and application oriented.Mathematics is as old as mankind and civilization. Mathematics is advancing at spectacular rate and it is about logical analysis, decision making, deductions, precision and is also about quantity, space, change and structure. Mathematics has a pervasive influence on our everyday lives, and contributes to the wealth of the country. The curriculum is framed using time tested and Internationally well-known books and is also based on the feed back from the best programmes available in our country. The curriculum includes different branches of mathematics that have a wide range of practical applications such as Algebra, Analysis, Mathematical Modeling, computer programming, Mathematical Statistics and Operation Research. The curriculum is so developed that the study of mathematics can satisfy a wide range of interests and abilities. It develops the imagination; it trains in clear and logical thought.

Those who qualify in M.Sc. Mathematics are in fortunate position of having a wide range of career choices. The abilities to use logical thought, to make deduction from assumption, to use advanced concepts are all enhanced by a Mathematics degree course. It is for this reason that Mathematicians are increasingly in demand. With M.Sc. Mathematics degree, one should be able to turn his/her hand to Finance, Statistics, Engineering, Computers, Teaching or Accountancy with a success not possible to other post graduates.

1. Title and Duration of the Course:

1.The post-graduates course in Mathematics will be called as the Master of Science in Mathematics.
2. The M.Sc. Mathematics programme will be of two academic years’ duration and conducted in four semesters with each semester having an academic duration
of 14 to 16 weeks.

2. Admission Qualification

1. Candidates who have passed  B.Sc. / B.Sc.Ed from a recognized University with Mathematics as one of the major subjects.
2. Candidates who have passed BE/B.Tech from a recognized University / Institution.

3. Medium of Instruction:

The medium of instruction of M.Sc. Mathematics Programme in English only. However, Examination may be answered in English only. Under open distance system, a paper is called “Course” and a course as “Programme”

4. Course of Study:

1. The M.Sc. in Mathematics programme shall be in Semester Scheme. Although the duration of the programme is two years, the maximum period for completion of the programme shall be four years.
2.There shall be five courses in each semester. Each paper shall be of 100 marks. (80 Exam) + 20 (Internal Assessment).
3.There shall be regular counseling, Contact Programmes for the candidates.

5. Programme Structure:

A candidate has to earn totally 70 credits form all 4 semesters. The 1st and 2nd semesters have 5 theory courses of 3 credits each. The 3rd and 4th semester have 5 and 4 theory papers respectively of each 4 credits. In the 4th semester the candidate is expected to take up an independent project of 4 credits. A dissertation should be prepared and submitted to the Academic Partner, Sandip Foundation, Mulund (W), Mumbai – 400080 for evaluation.

6. Credit System:

M.Sc. Mathematics Programme of Karnataka State Open University is designed keeping in view the credits prescribed and recognized by the Distance Educational Council (DEC). Each course is allotted with 3 credits. Credit delinates the study hour; and 1 credit is 30 hours of study. A candidate has to earmark 90 hours per course for studies, which includes teaching, learning, library, preparation of Internal Assessment and Examination.

7. Scheme Of Examination
a. Internal assessment (IA) through assignments with a weightage of 20%
b. Term-end examination having a weightage of 80%
c. Each paper will be of 100 marks
d. Minimum for pass is each course is 40% in each component.

M.Sc(Computer Science) :

Objective:As we enter the 21 st Century, the realm of electronic communication, which encompasses telecommunication, broadcasting, Information Technology and Enabled services in industries, is undergoing profound changes leading to Global Information Infrastructure (GII) . This is capable of carrying any type of Information. Information Communication Technology is increasingly powerful tool for development of Nation and transformed the way of human life as no other technology has. As India is emerging as an IT Superpower in the world, it is our responsibility to think on the advances in this area by harnessing the younger generation in IT/Computer Education.In view of this, the Karnataka State Open University is offering a Two Year semester based M.Sc. in Computer Science Degree Programme (Two Semester per year-Total Four Semesters). The programme is specifically designed for a targeting the Research and Development, Teaching and Software developing in the field of Computer Science. This programme content is designed in such a way that it can mould candidates to get their job in IT Computers and other sectors. The Karnataka State Open University’s M.Sc. [Computer Science] Programme is tightly scheduled and highly structured, client centered programme that aims at developing the software professionals to keep abreast of the most recent development in the field of Computer Science for the requirements of the dynamic and highly global environment of the present era. The curriculum based on the feedback from the best programmes available in the market, aims at enriching and sharpening software developing skills.

In short, the programme will develop in participants a variety of research and development and teaching skills that will lend a new edge and force to their own skills to handle myriads of challenges in the ever changing scenario of modern Software developing field. The programme also offers the much needed channel for upward mobility among practising R & D in universities / Industries / Colleges, Teaching, Professionals, Software Engineers, and Programmers, System Programmers etc., at their own workplaces.

 Admission Qualification

The candidates who fully any one of the condition as stated below are eligible to seek admission in M.Sc Computer Science.
a). B.Sc/B.E. graduates perceiving the higher qualification are admitted to M.SC. Computer Science having studied Computer Science / Information Technology / Information Science / Computer Application as one of the major subjects with atleast 50% of marks.
b).B.C.A with aggregate of 50% and above
c).B.Sc / B.E. graduates having studied Computer Science / Information Technology / Information Science / Computer Application as one of the major subjects.
d).B.C.A graduates with atleast 3 years of experience in IT field / Teaching.

3. Programme Structure:
The programme has totally 4 semesters each for 20 credits. A candidates has to earn totally 72 credits from all 4 semesters. The 1st and 2nd semesters have 4 theory course of each 4 credits and 2 laboratory course each of 2 credits each. The 3rd semester has 3 common course of each 4 credits, an elective course of 4 credits and a mini project of 4 credits. The 4th semester has one common course of 4 credits, and a major project work of 12 credits.

4. Maximum Duration for Completing M.Sc. Computer Science Programme:

A candidate who is admitted to the M.Sc. Computer Science programme shall complete the degree within twice the duration of the Programme i.e., 4 years, from the date of his/her admission failing which he has to seek admission afresh.

Admission Qualification:
Course Name: M. Sc. IT (MSCIT)

Duration of Course:- 2 Years

Admission to First Semester
Admission is open to those candidates who have successfully completed their Graduation in any discipline from a recognized University with mathematics in 10+2
Or
Admission is open to those candidates who have successfully completed their Graduation in any discipline from a recognized University and have either completed their 6 months course in IT/Computer Applications or have one year IT experience.

Leteral Entry Scheme

Admission to Second Semester
Admission is open to those candidates who have successfully completed their Graduation in any discipline from a recognized University and have successfully completed four semesters of GNIIT or 2 year certificate course from any recognized institution.

Admission to Third Semester
Admission is open to those candidates who have successfully completed their Graduation in any discipline from a recognised University and has successfully completed PGDCA/PGDIT from a recognised University or BE ( CS / IT ) or GNIIT or PGDCA from Cal-C or BCA/B. Sc ( CS/IT) from a recognised University/DOEACC ‘A’ level.

Note: The student who will opt for lateral exit will not be able to continue this programme.
